Ingredients:

  • 4 medium apples (about 1.5 lbs or 680g, preferably a mix like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (15ml)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (2g)
  • 1/4 cup water (60ml)
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (1g, optional)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. Wash and core the apples; peel if desired. Cut into 1-inch chunks.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine apples, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), water, and a pinch of salt.
  3. Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir occasionally until the mixture begins to simmer.
  4. Lower the heat and cover the saucepan. Let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until apples are tender but still hold their shape.
  5. Remove the lid and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes if you desire a thicker consistency.
  6. Transfer to a serving dish or jar and let cool slightly before serving.
