Ingredients:
- 8 slices of bread (Brioche, Challah, or Texas Toast are ideal)
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- ¼ cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, for cooking
- Maple syrup (Optional)
- Fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) (Optional)
- Powdered sugar (Optional)
- Whipped cream (Optional)
- Chopped nuts (pecans, walnuts) (Optional)
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined and smooth.
- Place bread slices in a shallow dish or baking pan. Pour the custard mixture over the bread, ensuring both sides are well coated. Let the bread soak for at least 5 minutes, or up to 15 minutes in the fridge for extra custardy goodness.
- Melt the butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Ensure the pan is hot enough before adding the bread.
- Carefully transfer the soaked bread slices to the hot skillet, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
- Cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. The center should be set and not soggy.
- Serve the french toast immediately with your desired toppings.
