Ingredients:

  • 8 slices of bread (Brioche, Challah, or Texas Toast are ideal)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, for cooking
  • Maple syrup (Optional)
  • Fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) (Optional)
  • Powdered sugar (Optional)
  • Whipped cream (Optional)
  • Chopped nuts (pecans, walnuts) (Optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined and smooth.
  2. Place bread slices in a shallow dish or baking pan. Pour the custard mixture over the bread, ensuring both sides are well coated. Let the bread soak for at least 5 minutes, or up to 15 minutes in the fridge for extra custardy goodness.
  3. Melt the butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Ensure the pan is hot enough before adding the bread.
  4. Carefully transfer the soaked bread slices to the hot skillet, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
  5. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. The center should be set and not soggy.
  6. Serve the french toast immediately with your desired toppings.
