Ingredients:

  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the whole milk, sugar, and baking soda.
  2. Stir to dissolve the sugar and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  3. Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
  4. Continue simmering for 1 to 2 hours until the mixture thickens and turns a caramel color.
  5. Once desired consistency is reached, stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Remove from heat, let cool slightly, then transfer to a jar.
