Ingredients:
- 4 cups whole milk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions:
- In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the whole milk, sugar, and baking soda.
- Stir to dissolve the sugar and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
- Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
- Continue simmering for 1 to 2 hours until the mixture thickens and turns a caramel color.
- Once desired consistency is reached, stir in the vanilla extract.
- Remove from heat, let cool slightly, then transfer to a jar.
