- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions:
- Pour vegetable oil into a deep skillet to a depth of about 2 inches; heat over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk and the egg until well combined.
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
- Gently fold in the chopped onion until evenly distributed.
- Using a spoon or small scoop, drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, frying in batches. Cook for 3-4 minutes until golden brown on all sides.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the hush puppies from the oil, and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
