Ingredients:

- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract (optional)
- Zest from 1 lemon or 1 orange (optional)
- Fresh herbs (e.g., mint, basil) – a small handful (optional)
Instructions:
- In a medium saucepan, mix sugar and water.
- Place the saucepan over medium heat.
- Stir the mixture until the sugar fully dissolves – this typically takes about 5 minutes.
- If using, add flavor enhancers during the heating process.
- Continue to heat for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing flavors to infuse (if applicable).
- Remove from heat and let the syrup cool completely.
- If flavor enhancers were added, pour the syrup through a fine mesh strainer into a heatproof container.
- Transfer the simple syrup into a clean jar or bottle. Seal tightly and refrigerate.
