Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a large saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat until shimmering.
  2. Add chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  4. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stir to combine.
  5. Add sugar, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and pepper.
  6. Bring the sauce to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low and let simmer uncovered for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Cook until sauce thickens and flavors meld, adjusting seasoning as needed.
  8. Remove from heat and stir in fresh basil, if using.
