Ingredients:
- 1 cup (240ml) warm water (105-115°F / 40-46°C)
- 1 teaspoon (5ml) sugar
- 2 ¼ teaspoons (7g) active dry yeast
- 2 ½ cups (315g) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1 teaspoon (6g) salt
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) olive oil, plus more for greasing
- 1 cup (240ml) pizza sauce
- 2 cups (224g) shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup (50g) pepperoni, thinly sliced
- 1 teaspoon (2g) Italian seasoning
- Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) milk or water
- Grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
Instructions:
- Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- While the dough rises, mix the pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, and Italian seasoning in a bowl. Set aside.
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Punch down the risen dough. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface into a large rectangle, about 1/8-inch thick.
- Spread the pizza sauce mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Starting from one long side, tightly roll the dough into a log. Use a pizza cutter or sharp knife to slice the log into 1-inch thick rolls.
- Place the rolls, cut-side up, on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Whisk together the egg and milk/water. Brush the tops of the rolls with the egg wash. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese (if using).
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Let the pizza rolls cool slightly on the baking sheet before serving. Enjoy your Homemade Pizza Rolls!
