Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups (480g) powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons (10ml) vanilla extract
  • 2-4 tablespoons (30-60ml) milk or heavy cream
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes).
  2. With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, until fully incorporated. Stop and scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and salt (if using) to the mixture. Mix on medium speed until combined.
  4. Add the milk or heavy cream, one tablespoon at a time, mixing on medium speed until the icing reaches your desired consistency. For a thinner icing, add more liquid. For a thicker icing, add more powdered sugar.
  5. Beat the icing on medium-high speed for 1-2 minutes, until light and airy.
