Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups (475ml) beef broth
  • 1 (15 oz / 425g) can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 2 cups (approx. 170g) uncooked pasta (elbow macaroni or small shells work best)
  • 1 ½ cups (approx. 170g) shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup (approx. 55g) shredded mozzarella cheese (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional toppings: chopped pickles, chopped tomatoes, green onions, sesame seeds

Instructions:

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion, breaking up the beef with a spoon. Cook until the beef is browned and the onion is softened. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute, until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the beef broth, tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, and uncooked pasta. Mix well to ensure the pasta is submerged.
  4. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed. Check for doneness of the pasta.
  5. Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the cheddar cheese and mozzarella cheese (if using) until the cheeses are fully melted and the sauce is creamy.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately, garnished with your favorite burger toppings.
