Ingredients:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef (or ground turkey)
- 1 small yellow onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups (475ml) beef broth
- 1 (15 oz / 425g) can tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 2 cups (approx. 170g) uncooked pasta (elbow macaroni or small shells work best)
- 1 ½ cups (approx. 170g) shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup (approx. 55g) shredded mozzarella cheese (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional toppings: chopped pickles, chopped tomatoes, green onions, sesame seeds
Instructions:
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion, breaking up the beef with a spoon. Cook until the beef is browned and the onion is softened. Drain off any excess grease.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute, until fragrant.
- Stir in the beef broth, tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, and uncooked pasta. Mix well to ensure the pasta is submerged.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed. Check for doneness of the pasta.
- Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the cheddar cheese and mozzarella cheese (if using) until the cheeses are fully melted and the sauce is creamy.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately, garnished with your favorite burger toppings.
