Ingredients:

  • Standard 9-inch Round Pan: Approximately 9 inches in diameter, 2 inches deep, 8 cups volume (1.9 Litres)
  • 8-inch Round Pan: Approximately 8 inches in diameter, 2 inches deep, 6 cups volume (1.4 Litres)
  • Square 8-inch Pan: Approximately 8x8 inches, 2 inches deep, 8 cups volume (1.9 Litres)
  • Square 9-inch Pan: Approximately 9x9 inches, 2 inches deep, 10 cups volume (2.4 Litres)
  • Loaf Pan (9x5 inch): Approximately 9x5 inches, 3 inches deep, 8 cups volume (1.9 Litres)
  • Loaf Pan (8x4 inch): Approximately 8x4 inches, 2.5 inches deep, 6 cups volume (1.4 Litres)
  • Bundt Pan: Approximately 10 inches in diameter, 4 inches deep, 12 cups volume (2.8 Litres)

Instructions:

  1. Identify the Original Pan Size and Volume: Determine the original pan size from the recipe (e.g., 9-inch round) and note its approximate volume (e.g., 8 cups). Refer to list provided above.
  2. Identify the Target Pan Size and Volume: Determine the pan size you want to use (e.g., 8-inch square) and note its approximate volume (e.g., 8 cups).
  3. Calculate the Conversion Factor: Divide the target pan volume by the original pan volume. (e.g., 8 cups / 8 cups = 1.0 – no change!)
  4. Adjust Ingredient Amounts: Multiply each ingredient quantity from the original recipe by the conversion factor. Round to reasonable amounts (e.g., don't try to measure half an egg!)
  5. Adjust Baking Time (If Necessary): If the target pan is smaller, the baking time may need to be slightly reduced (check frequently toward the end of baking). If the target pan is larger, the baking time may need to be slightly increased (check frequently toward the end of baking). Remember - thickness is king here. Denser cakes will always take longer.
  6. Prepare Your Target Pan: Grease and flour (or use baking spray) your chosen pan.
  7. Pour and Bake: Pour the adjusted batter into the prepared pan and bake according to the original recipe instructions, adjusting the baking time as necessary, while closely monitoring for doneness. Look for the cues in the original recipe - golden brown? Springs back to the touch? Knife comes out clean?
  8. Cool and Enjoy: Cool the cake in the pan according to the recipe instructions before inverting and enjoying your perfectly pan-converted creation!
