Ingredients:

  • 4 slices of thick bread (e.g., brioche or challah) (about 120g each)
  • 2 large eggs (about 100g)
  • ½ cup whole milk (120ml)
  • Salt, to taste
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 2-4 slices of deli ham (about 100g)
  • 2-4 slices of turkey or chicken (about 100g)
  • 2 slices of Swiss or Gruyère cheese (about 60g)
  • Unsalted butter, for frying (about 30g)
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
  • Raspberry jam or maple syrup, for dipping

Instructions:

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, and nutmeg until well combined.
  2. Layer one slice of bread with ham, turkey/chicken, and cheese. Top with a second slice of bread to create a sandwich. Repeat for the second sandwich.
  3. Dip each sandwich in the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are well-coated. Allow excess to drip off.
  4. Over medium heat, melt butter in the skillet until foamy.
  5. Carefully place the sandwiches in the pan. Cook until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  6. Remove from the pan, dust with powdered sugar (if using), and serve with raspberry jam or syrup.
