Ingredients:
- 16 mozzarella sticks (string cheese), approximately 4 oz / 113g
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup (60ml) milk
- 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour
- 2 cups (160g) Italian-style breadcrumbs (or panko breadcrumbs for extra crunch)
- 1/2 cup (50g) grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasoning
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Vegetable or canola oil, for frying (about 3-4 cups, enough to submerge the sticks halfway)
- Marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or spicy mayo, for dipping
Instructions:
- Cut mozzarella sticks in half (optional, for bite-sized pieces). Freeze mozzarella sticks for at least 15 minutes to prevent melting.
- In bowl 1, whisk eggs and milk together. In bowl 2, add flour. In bowl 3, combine breadcrumbs, Parmesan, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
- Roll each frozen mozzarella stick in flour, shaking off excess. Dip in egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off. Coat thoroughly in breadcrumb mixture, pressing to adhere. For extra crunch, repeat the egg and breadcrumb coating.
- Place breaded sticks back in the freezer for 15-20 minutes while oil heats.
- Heat oil in a deep pot or fryer to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to ensure accuracy.
- Carefully add 3-4 sticks to the hot oil at a time, avoiding overcrowding. Fry for 1.5-2.5 minutes, flipping once, until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces.
