Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) / 113g unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup / 100g light brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup / 50g granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons / 7.5ml vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups / 156g all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon / 2.5ml baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon / 1.25ml salt
  • 1 cup / 170g semi-sweet chocolate chips (plus extra for topping)
  • 1 cup frosting (store-bought or homemade buttercream)
  • Sprinkles or mini chocolate chips

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and lightly flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Cream together softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  6. Gently stir in chocolate chips.
  7. Spread the dough evenly into the prepared pan. Flatten the top slightly. Add extra chocolate chips on top.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until edges are golden brown and the center is just set. Don't overbake!
  9. Let cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely. Decorate with frosting and sprinkles (optional).
  10. Cut into slices and serve.
