Ingredients:

  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 0.5 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 0.5 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tbsp unsulfured molasses
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 0.5 tsp ground black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp dry mustard powder
  • 0.25 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp liquid smoke
  • 0.5 tsp kosher salt

Instructions:

  1. In a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan, whisk together the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, molasses, and Worcestershire sauce until smooth.
  2. Stir in the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, dry mustard, and cayenne pepper, whisking vigorously to remove clumps.
  3. Place the pot over medium heat until it reaches a gentle bubble. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 20–25 minutes.
  4. Monitor for visual cues: the sauce is ready when it has darkened in color and thickened enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  5. Remove from heat. Stir in the liquid smoke and kosher salt. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
  6. Allow the sauce to cool completely at room temperature before transferring to a glass jar for storage.
