Ingredients:
- 1 pound (450g) breakfast sausage (preferably spicy or sage-flavoured)
- 1/4 cup (30g) all-purpose flour
- 2 cups (480ml) whole milk
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
Instructions:
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sausage and break it up with a spatula. Cook until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
- Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage. Stir well to combine and cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate raw flour taste.
- Gradually whisk in the milk, breaking up any lumps. Continue to stir until smooth and combined.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, and cook until it thickens to your preferred consistency, about 5-10 minutes. Stir frequently to prevent sticking.
- Add black pepper, salt, and garlic powder (if using), adjusting to taste.
- Once thickened, serve immediately over warm biscuits or toast.
