Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 3/4 cup milk

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, sauté the onion and bell pepper until softened (about 5 minutes).
  3. Add the garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  4. Brown the ground beef in the skillet, breaking it apart until fully cooked. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  5. Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and pepper; blend well. Simmer for a few minutes until heated through.
  6. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  7. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  8. Add milk gradually, stirring until a soft dough forms.
  9. Spread the Sloppy Joe filling evenly in the bottom of the baking dish.
  10. Drop spoonfuls of biscuit dough over the filling, covering as much as possible.
  11. Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the biscuit topping is golden brown and cooked through.
  12. Cool slightly before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
