Ingredients:

  • 12 ounces ziti pasta
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef or sausage (optional)
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup chopped fresh basil or 2 teaspoons dried
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Boil salted water in a large pot and cook ziti until al dente, about 8-10 minutes. Drain and toss with olive oil. Set aside.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté onions until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for an additional minute. If using meat, add ground beef or sausage, cooking until browned. Incorporate crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15 minutes.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, Parmesan cheese, egg, and basil. Mix until smooth.
  4. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread a thin layer of sauce at the bottom of the baking dish. Add half the pasta, followed by half the cheese mixture, and a third of the mozzarella. Repeat layers, finishing with remaining sauce and mozzarella on top.
  5. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until golden and bubbly.
  6. Allow to cool for 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil before serving.
